Oklahoma Feeling Recession

Posted by neocaablogger on February 13, 2009

New figures reported by the Oklahoma Policy Institute reveals increasing confirmation that the national recession has now hit the Sooner State. In the last three months of 2008, our state’s unemployment rate jumped from 3.8% to 4.9%, while the average weekly number of people filing initial claims for Unemployment Insurance benefits more than doubled. Meanwhile, the state’s previously healthy fiscal situation showed clear signs of illness in January. Plunging gross production tax revenues, along with weak personal income and motor vehicle tax collections, led to January General Revenue collections falling $50.8 million, or 9.3 percent, below the certified estimate. Ten households in Northeastern Oklahoma will get help reducing their home energy costs thanks to a $40,000 supplemental grant from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce. Funding for Weatherization services is authorized through the US Department of Energy. For every $1 invested, weatherization returns $1.53 in energy-related benefits.
