900,000 Rural Children to Recieve Child Tax Credit for First Time

Posted by neocaablogger on March 28, 2009

More than 500,000 rural families, or almost 9 percent of rural families, will become newly eligible for the Child Tax Credit (CTC) under the expansion included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, according to a new report from the Carsey Institute.  Within these families are an estimated 900,000 rural children. The report, Child Tax Credit Expansion Increases Number of Families Eligible for a Refund, also finds that the proportion of urban families benefiting from the expanded CTC is slightly lower than in rural areas, while only 5 percent of suburban families are newly eligible for the credit. (Source: Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire)

Stimulus Cash for Weatherizing Homes

Posted by neocaablogger on March 22, 2009

Almost $61 million in federal stimulus package money will
soon be flowing into Oklahoma
for weatherization services. Over the
next few months, these funds will be distributed to community action agencies
throughout the state, including Northeast Oklahoma Community Action Agency
(NEOCAA).

Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act guidelines,
the Weatherization Assistance Program:

·
Allows for an average investment of up to $6,500 per home in energy efficiency
upgrades
.

·
Expands income eligibility this year to families earning up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level – or about $44,000 a year
for a family of four
.

“Investing in weatherization will help our economy in the
short-term by creating jobs, and families will enjoy long-term benefits through
decreased energy costs. This money is going to make it possible to add
insulation, plug leaks and install more efficient systems for families,” said
Jean Cooper, Executive Director of NEOCAA.

According to the Department of Energy, the Weatherization
Assistance Program reduces heating bills for low-income families by an average
of 32 percent.

NEOCAA is accepting applications from qualified households.
