Help spread the word about “Yes I Can” to Oklahoma’s Foster Care Youth

Posted by debrulerinc on September 30, 2014

Yes I Can” is an “800” number that youth can call for assistance if they have been in foster care.  They are eligible if they aged out in another state as well.  DHS will confirm eligibility. [Youth who were in OKDHS or tribal custody, in out of home care on their 18th birthday, and are now between the ages of 18 and 21; and youth who have entered into an OKDHS approved guardianship or adoption after the age of 16.]

Assistance may include rental assistance, utility deposits, assistance with furniture and household goods, help with purchasing cars, etc.  They can also request education assistance (ETV is education and training voucher).  Up to $5,000 per youth is available for education and training.  They need to apply for Pell grant and OLAP.  DHS can pay for expenses not covered by these programs—generally their room and board.

For 16-18 year olds, Yes I Can pays for graduation expenses (pictures for example), computers, driving school, driver’s license and birth certificates, classes to work on remedial education, tutors, mentors, etc.
