Poverty Rates Still Higher for Women than for Men

Posted by debrulerinc on October 1, 2014

The latest census data shows that while neither gender saw a statistically significant change in poverty from the previous year, the poverty rate for women (14.5 percent) is still higher than for men (11 percent), according to a new analysis from The National Women’s Law Center. The report, Insecure & Unequal: Poverty and Income Among Women and Families 2000-2013, finds that the poverty rates for black, Hispanic, and Native American women were about three times higher than for white, non-Hispanic men. Poverty also rose significantly among women 65 and older — from 11 percent in 2012 to 11.6 percent in 2013. Additionally, the report assessed national trends in the wage gap. Women working full time, year-round in 2013 were typically paid 78 cents for every dollar paid to their male counterparts. That represents an annual difference of $10,876 in median earnings.
